It's that time of year again that me and all landscape photographers look forward to! October is a very exciting month for many landscape photographers around the UK and residents as it's when the annual Landscape Photographer Of The Year results are announced!
The landscape photographer of the year awards have been running for 15 years and this week is the competitions 16th year running. The competition is a prestigious award and is very well respected among photographers in the landscape community, The finalists are all carefully selected by Charlie Waite and his team to be featured in their annual book and touring exhibition around all major railway stations in the UK.
Entries opened in January and closed in May although the winning photographers were only just announced yesterday in the heart of London along the Embankment of the Thames. This year there was over 17,000 entrants across both the adult and youth categories so when I found out that I had made it to the finals I was over joyed with excitement! Especially when I found out it was not only the one image but two!

Costal View Category Entry - "Dancing In The Dusk"
Costal view is a brand new category Charlie introduced into the youth competition this year, and as most of my work is captured at the sea, to see this category be introduced was fantastic! Dancing in the dusk is the name that I gave this image, It shows a Staling murmuration dancing in the blue and purple sky above Eastbourne pier and It's one of my favourite images that I have ever captured mainly because of the unique colours within the image and the magical formations of the starlings. After a long build of tension I was ecstatic to find out I had been Highly commended! Below is what I wrote to the judges about this particular image -
"A murmuration is a time of friendship and unity among the starlings, I captured this magnificent scene of the starling murmuration's above Eastbourne pier on the 19th of February in 2023 at around 5:30 in the evening just after the sun had dipped below the horizon during the blue hour. I was so pleased to have captured the reflection of the pier in the water and the sand as I feel it echo's the shape of the murmuration in the sky. I loved watching the magic and the wonder of looking up at the vibrant sky and seeing the beautiful dance of the starlings.

Classic View Category Entry - "The Last Tree Standing"
Classic view is all about capturing iconic views or familiar scenes in a variety of ways capturing the beauty within the subject as well as the weather and environment around it. When I entered the competition I knew my photograph of a lone tree that I captured would be the perfect entry for this years competition! I called it "The Last Tree Standing" as the tree in the centre of the scene stands tall and strong right in the centre of endless white snow. I was even happier when I discovered that this image also was highly commended! Below is the description that I gave to the judges about this photograph.
"It does not snow very often in Eastbourne, so when I woke up to see a blanket of white snow covering the rolling hills behind my home and discovered that my school was shut due to the weather, I grabbed the chance to get out with my camera before sunrise. This photo captures a lone tree standing tall in a snowy scene just as the sun was breaking through the misty sky. The contrast between the dark branches and the bright snow creates a striking visual effect and evokes a sense of solitude and tranquility, as well as resilience and beauty. The tree seems to defy the harsh winter, embracing its surrounding with grace and dignity."
Landscape photographer of the year has been running for 16 years now thanks to its sponsors such as National Rail, MPB, 3LeggedThing, Suttons and many other companies. The competition also has a huge following across the UK which has led to Charlie publishing a book of all the finalist images each year. It is a fantastic book and is definitely worth a purchase if you have a love for our nations landscape! I was lucky enough to get a look as soon as the results were announced on Wednesday the 25th and I have attached the images of this beautiful book below.

The Collection 16 Book -

Thank you everyone!
Yesterday was a magnificent evening and is definitely one that I will not forget! It was such an honour to be invited along to this years ceremony and the buzz within the room from the other photographers and event organisers made the night an exciting and joyful evening and I cannot wait to try and get this far again next year! And of course thank you to everyone who has supported me for the past few years with my photography whether that is regularly checking what I'm up to on my socials or purchasing my latest prints and products.
